Lung cancer begins in the lungs and is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States among men and women. Physicians divide lung cancer into two major types based on its appearance. The two general types are: small cell lung cancer which occurs almost exclusively in heavy smokers and non-small cell lung cancer that includes several types of cancers that behave in a similar way as small cell.
